Tucson Unified seeks Audit Committee volunteers, Internal Auditor

District seeks individuals with accounting, auditing, financial experience for positions
Posted on: April 17, 2015

Tucson Unified School District is seeking volunteers for its Audit Committee, which assists in assuring that the TUSD Governing Board adequately complies with its fiduciary oversight obligations, helps strengthen TUSD's internal financial controls, and helps provide greater transparency of the District's stewardship of tax dollars.

The district is also seeking an Internal Auditor. This will be a paid position that will make reports to the Governing Board and will report to the superintendent for administrative matters.

Applicants for the Internal Auditor position will be interviewed by the Audit Committee, which will recommend a candidate for the Governing Board's approval. The goal is to have the Internal Auditor in place by July 1, when the new business management system, or ERP, is in place.

The Governing Board has been debating the Internal Auditor position for about six years—through three superintendents. Concerns have been raised about who the auditor will report to and how the position will be funded.

"With a couple of key retirements, we have the funding for the position," Dr. Sánchez said. "The Governing Board will vote on who gets the position, and the auditor will report all findings to them."

Dr. Sánchez said that in the interest of transparency and with the new ERP coming on this summer, this is the time to put the debate to rest and bring the Internal Auditor on board.

Volunteers who live within Tucson Unified's boundaries and have knowledge of accounting, auditing, financial reporting and school district finances are interested in serving on the Audit Committee can find more information at the Audit Committee web page.

The Internal Audit positon, including a complete job description, will be posted at
