The Midwest clinic International Band, Orchestra and Music Conference offers guests interested in music education an array of clinics, exhibits, performances, and access to music and teaching icons. The conference attracts over 17,000 attendees from all 50 states and more than 30 countries. Each year, top ensembles throughout the United States are selected to perform demonstrating the highest level of music performance, contemporary musical styles, and educational techniques.
Rincon High School was opened in 1958 and was combined in 1985 with University High School, the District’s college prep program to form Rincon/University High School. The school has 2200 students and serves a diverse population of students from more than 40 different middle schools. The performing arts curriculum at Rincon/University High school has grown to include 3 concert bands, 2 Jazz Ensembles, Marching Band, 1 Winter Drumline, 2 Percussion Ensembles, and 3 competitive Color Guard units. In addition, there are 3 orchestras, 4 choirs, 5 dance classes, general music, and piano lab. The Rincon/University Jazz Ensemble is made its first appearance at the Arizona Music Educators Conference in February, 2018. The band has received Superiors with Distinction at every Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association Area and State Festival for the last decade. Rincon/University has also been represented in every All-State Jazz Ensemble during that period. In 2014, the band was the featured high school ensemble at the Highland Jazz Festival. Jazz I meets four days a week at 7am zero period. In 2018, an astounding 6 saxophonists from Rincon/University High School earned spots in the Arizona All-State Jazz Ensembles completely sweeping the sax chairs in the top band. In all, 9 RUHS jazz students were accepted into All-State Jazz 2018.
Jeff Marchant earned his Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Arizona studying trombone with Tom Ervin. While there, he was a member of the Olive Street Stompers Dixieland Band and was fortunate enough to perform with such musicians as Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Watrous, Bobby Shew, and Ladd McIntosh. After college, he went on to perform and record with such groups as Itsy Bitsy Spiders, Calexico, Descarga, Sam Taylor and the In Your Face Horns, and the Crawdaddy-O Brass band. He is in the 8th year as the Director of Bands at Rincon/University High School, in the Tucson Unified School District.
